ALTERNATIVES IN ACTION YOUTH HOST WEST ALAMEDA COMMUNITY EVENT: “NOTES OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD”
YOUTH ARTS & MUSIC FESTIVAL SHOWCASING THE TALENTS OF BAY AREA YOUTH
Alameda, CA - On Friday, April 29th, 2011 from 3-6:00 pm, youth from Alternatives in Action’s West Alameda Sound Recording Studio Class will host a Youth Arts and Music Festival: Notes of the Neighborhood, on-site at its 1900 3rd Street Campus. This FREE community event will feature talented youth artists performing a broad spectrum of musical styles (including hip hop, jazz, folk and drums), dance, spoken word, as well as face painting, and a community-wide, shared international foods potluck. The event will also feature an interactive graffiti wall and creation of a community mural on which all guests will be invited to paint.
Notes of the Neighborhood is wholly created, owned, and proudly produced by young people for other young people and their community. While the city of Alameda has been named one of the nation’s “100 Best Communities for Young People”, youth from the West End of Alameda identified that there is still a great need for positive outlets and opportunities in their immediate community. Youth participating in Alternatives in Action’s West Alameda programs created this event with three primary goals: to build community; to provide a platform for youth artistic expression; and to showcase a pool of amazing, creative and talented youth. In the words of youth project lead Daniel Zuranich, “we want to bring the community together so we can enjoy art and get to know our neighbors.” Performers represent several Bay Area schools and programs, including Alternatives in Action’s own Bay Area School of Enterprise, Encinal High School, Island High, Academy of Alameda, College of Alameda, McClymonds High School, Bay Area Video Coalitions’ BUMP Records, and alumni.
The party is a free, family-friendly event open to all members of the community. No tickets necessary. Come check out the art and music, dance, and participate in the creation of the community mural. Contribute a taste of your own culture by bringing a potluck dish to share. Support youth initiative and creative expression.
