The USS Hornet Museum will commemorate the 69th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid, America’s daring World War II bombing raid of Tokyo, on Saturday, April 16, during the aircraft carrier’s special “Living Ship Day.” The “Doolittle Raiders” were an elite group of airmen who executed an historic, daytime air raid against Tokyo in WWII led by legendary pilot Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle, USAAF (who was born in Alameda). The tribute will feature 1940s era music by the Swingin Blue Stars at 11:30 a.m., followed by keynote speaker David Styles, noted aero/auto historian and author, at 1 p.m.
From 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. the USS Hornet features flight simulations and comes to life as an operating aircraft carrier. Visitors can meet former crew, sit in the cockpit of a fighter jet, enjoy the sights and sounds of naval aviation and witness simulated flight operations as aircraft are lifted to the flight deck and placed into launch position
