Two Dead In Crash, Including Child: Identified

The crash involved a truck, van and a BMW.

OAKLAND, CA — A sig-alert has been canceled and all lanes of I-880 are open.

Two people died in a crash on northbound Interstate Highway 880 just south of Fifth Avenue in Oakland, including a child, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash involved three vehicles. According to the CHP, a white box truck was disabled on the right shoulder with its hazard lights on. A black BMW was speeding north when it veered off the roadway and hit the truck. Immediately after the collision, the BMW re-entered the roadway and was struck by a Ford F-250.

A child and a man who were sitting in the back seat of the BMW died in the collision. It appeared that the child was not properly restrained inside the vehicle, CHP officials said.The driver of the BMW, another child and a woman passenger of the BMW were all transported to local hospitals, according to the CHP.

The victims have been identified by the Alameda County coroner as 23-year-old Dion Christy and 5-year-old Neveah Brown, both of Oakland, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Ray Kelly said.

One vehicle caught fire.

The collision occurred shortly after 5 a.m. The sig-alert was canceled just after 8:30.

Earlier, all lanes were blocked and traffic was being diverted onto I-580, making that road extra congested. Two lanes were reopened before 6:30.

This is the second deadly crash on I-880 in the East Bay today. The earlier one happened in San Leandro. It also prompted a sig-alert, which has since been canceled.

There was also a deadly crash in San Francisco.
