OAKLAND, CA — A man was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats after pulling out a knife on another driver during a road rage incident on an Oakland freeway, authorities said.

Traffic on the I-80 was at a standstill just before 3 p.m. on Friday when the suspect suddenly threw his vehicle into park, got out, and beamlined to another car while holding a knife in his hand, according to the California Highway Patrol.

"You want to catch a fade?" the suspect asked the driver, while leaning on his window, CHP said.

CHP officers were able to catch up to the driver, who confessed to threatening another driver with a knife, authorities said.

The suspect pulled over and was taken into custody on suspicion of making criminal threats, brandishing a deadly weapon and trying to destroy evidence, authorities said.

"In that moment, what started as frustration turned into something far more dangerous," CHP said. "Road rage isn’t just anger behind the wheel, it’s unpredictable, and it can turn violent in seconds."
