Nea CLC Strengthens High School Program
Nea Community Learning Center in Alameda strengthens high school curriculum to ensure students will meet all entry criteria for UC system.
New leadership at the Nea Community Learning Center (Nea) in Alameda, CA, is beefing up core courses in their high school curriculum. The additional coursework will ensure that high school students on track to graduate as of 2014-15 will meet all entry criteria for the University of California system and other colleges of their choice. As a result, Nea high school students will experience schedule adjustments over the coming weeks.
“We saw Nea’s change in leadership as an opportunity to review and confirm best practices,” said Patti Wilczek, Executive Director of Community Learning Center Schools (CLCS), Nea’s charter management organization. “These modifications will bring Nea’s high school program up to exemplary academic standards.”
Curriculum improvements follow the recommendations contained in a comprehensive review of classes, grading and credits conducted by Mike Janvier, a former Superintendent of Alameda Unified School District (AUSD), with significant experience in curriculum evaluation at creative model charter schools like Nea. The review uncovered anomalies that Janvier recommended addressing by splitting 10th and 11th grade Humanities into separate English and History courses, and adding an additional option to foreign language offerings.

“We are committed to the highest level of instructional rigor and integrity for our learners and are working closely with them to ensure a smooth transition into new classes,” said Annalisa Moore, Nea’s Interim Lead Facilitator (principal). “We are also excited about how these changes will combine with Nea’s creative and student-centered model to help learners achieve their highest potential,” Moore said.
Wilczek and Moore have met with Sean McPhetridge, AUSD Interim Superintendent, to ensure charter compliance and discuss any potential issues related to course changes at the school.
