ALAMEDA, CA — Steve Gorman is keeping his eye on a nest of newly hatched doves. Last Saturday, Steve wrote, "Our latest brood of doves are one week old today. Here, they pose with their proud mother in their nest above our deck in Alameda. We've been carefully watching them through all the stages of their life, from their parents mating, to nest preparation, egg laying, egg sitting, hatching, and finally their current stage of development. They should fledge in about a week or so, then mostly live on the ground near some protective bushes for another week, all the while being looked after and fed by their parents. After that, they should be able to fly off on their own and be independent. This is the second successful brood this year, though we've also lost eggs to crows, and lost one fledging chick to a Cooper's Hawk. Here's hoping that both these chicks avoid all the dangers and make it to adulthood!"

Thank you for the photo and narrative, Steve!
