Prizes for Young Actors in Alameda Shakespeare Monologue Competition

The Encinal High Shakespeare Club Announces the 2nd Annual Citywide Shakespeare Monologue Competition.

The Shakespeare Club of Encinal High School is proud to announce that it will host the 2nd Annual Citywide Shakespeare Monologue Competition. The competition which will take place on the Encinal High Cafeteria stage on Saturday, February 7, 2015 is open to all high school and middle school students who live or attend school in Alameda. Prize packages will be awarded to the judges’ top three choices.

The contest is modeled after the Shakespeare monologue competitions run by the English-Speaking Union in which students choose a monologue from one of Shakespeare’s 38 plays. They read, analyze and then perform the 1-2 minute speech for a panel of judges and an audience of their peers and the general public. Linnea Arneson, President of the club says, “We have introduced a few changes to this year’s competition. We will welcome middle school actors to compete on the same stage as the high school contestants. Also, because of a generous $250 grant from the Alameda Rotary Club, we are able to offer a Stage Combat workshop to the monologue participants.” The workshop will be taught by Carla Pantoja of Dueling Arts San Francisco. Ms. Pantoja works as a theatrical combat instructor for California Shakespeare Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre and San Francisco Shakespeare Festival.

The panel of judges for this year’s competition will include Robert Lundy-Paine, actor, director, film maker, and a Founding Member and Resident Director of Virago Theatre Company; Amy Marie Haven, actress, director, and co-Founder of Tomorrow Youth Repertory; and Julia Bruce, director and Shakespeare scholar.
