“The tension between representation and abstraction that is the essence of Sandy Walker’s art has remained a constant in his work from the beginning of his career. The nervous, erratic tracks of the loaded brush and the corporeality of each juicy daub could easily stand alone as a pleasing, richly expressive but purely abstract arrangement, particularly when viewed at close range. At a greater distance, this seemingly arbitrary patchwork of colors resolves itself into a representation of a specific place, a fully realized, illusionistic world complete with light and shadow and depth and space. Exactly where and when this perpetual shift occurs is impossible to pin down. Walker’s remarkable achievement is to hold in suspension two seemingly contradictory concepts: painting as an abstract network of marks on a surface versus painting as representation.”
...David Butler, director of the Ulrich Museum of Art
