Alameda Students March To Protest School Shootings

As part of the movement against gun violence in schools, studentsmarked the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting.

ALAMEDA, CA — Dozens of students walked out of school at 10 a.m. in Alameda on Friday, the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting. They were protesting gun violence in schools.

In a Facebook post, Alameda Police said, "We thank all participants for maintaining a peaceful march today."

Alameda Unified School District said in advance of the walkout that while it "supports our students’ rights to collective action and free speech," students who participated would receive unexcused absences "as is mandated under state law."

The district added, "We want our students to be politically aware and civically engaged. We also want them to be responsible and safe."
