Suspect Closely Connected To Family Of Toddler Found Dead In Napa Co.

OAKLAND, CA — One person has been arrested following the slaying of a 2-year-old whose body was found outdoors in rural Napa County, Oakland police said Thursday.

San Pablo police notified Oakland police just before 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 23 that 2-year-old Jamari Madkins may have been slain.

The slaying occurred in Oakland, police believe. The suspect was arrested with the help of San Pablo police. The suspect is being held on unrelated offenses as the Alameda County District Attorney's Office considers charges to file in the death of Jamari, police said.

The suspect has a close connection to the child, according to police.

"This is a tragic case," Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong said at a news conference Thursday afternoon. "This should not have happened."

Police are in contact with the child's family, Armstrong said.
