Can You Balance the City of Alameda's Budget?

The City of Alameda has included an online budget challenge on its website asking if residents have what it takes to balance its budget.

It claims that it was successful in balancing last year's budget, but forecasts an estimated $2.3 million General Fund deficit for the 2013-2014 fiscal year.

The City plans on spending $73.93 million with a revenue of $71.59 million. Pie charts show the breakdown of different agenies' spending including the library, Alameda Police and Fire and Public Works projects. It also shows revenue coming in from various taxes such as franchise, sales and property taxes.

The Budget Challenge is an interactive budget simulation that offers examples of policy choices City leaders must face in developing a balanced budget.
