USS Hornet Presents: Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

Bay Area Navy Veteran Ed Silveira, Eye Witness to Pearl Harbor Attack will be Special Guest Speaker

In remembrance of the 73rd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the USS Hornet Museum will hold a special ceremony honoring the memory of those whose lives were lost on Dec. 7, 1941.
The service begins at 11 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 7 onboard the Hornet located at 707 W. Hornet Ave., Pier 3, Alameda.

Mr. Ed Silveira, a Navy veteran and an eyewitness to the attack, will be the special guest speaker. He was 19-years-old and a crew member aboard the USS San Francisco, which came into dry dock the morning before the attack, but had to wait alongside the dock, saving it from a direct hit.
Join Mr. Silveira as he shares his memories and provides a first-person account of seeing battleships destroyed and the chaos that followed the surprise attack on that peaceful Sunday morning 73 years ago.

In addition, the Hornet’s resident chaplain John Berger will offer a special service to remember and honor those whose lives were lost. It will be followed by a wreath tossing ceremony. Flowers will be provided to all who wish to participate. The carrier’s flags will fly at half-mast in remembrance.
The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese Imperial Navy on Dec. 7, 1941 plunged the United States into World War II. The surprise attack severely crippled the US battleship fleet, including the sinking of the USS Arizona, which went down with 1,177 of her crew onboard.
