Your Input Needed for Spending School Bond Money

The committee responsible for reviewing how the school district's $179.5 million bond is spent has openings.

The Alameda Unified School District needs local residents to join the Measure I Independent Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee. The committee is responsible for reviewing and reporting on the Alameda Unified School District’s (AUSD) use of $179.5 million in facility bond revenue.

Alameda voters approved Measure I last November. Revenue from the bond can only be used for renovating and constructing facilities and other bond-related expenses, as described in the bond language.

The oversight committee will have 7 members, including a parent of an AUSD student, a parent who is active in an AUSD PTA or PTSA, a business person, a member of a taxpayer group, a senior citizen, and two at-large members.

The committee will meet at most quarterly. Four members will be appointed for an initial term of two years; the others will be appointed for an initial term of one year. All members will be eligible for re-appointment by the Board of Education if they would like to serve again. No member will serve more than three two-year terms.

The committee’s specific responsibilities will be to:

  • Inform the public about the district’s expenditure of Measure I bond proceeds;
  • Review expenditure reports produced by district staff to ensure that Measure I bond proceeds were expended only for the purposes set forth in Measure I; and
  • Present an annual written report to the Board of Education, outlining their activities and conclusions regarding the expenditure of Measure I bond proceeds.
