Albany Seeks Short Term Rental Taxes From Hosts

The tax is already on the books and the City wants its money. The Finance Department is offering a grace period before assessing penalties.

ALBANY, CA — The City of Albany charges tax on short terms rentals, such as those on Airbnb. The tax rate is 10 percent of the rent charged, and is a tax on the renter, to be collected by the operator.

If you haven't been paying the tax, now is the time to turn the money into the City.

If not, the Albany Finance Department plans to contact operators over the next few months to bring them into compliance.

"To encourage compliance," the City reports, it "will only be asking for taxes on rentals as of July 1, 2019, and no penalties or fees will be charged for late payment of taxes until the last quarter of 2019 taxes are due on January 31, 2020."

If you run an Airbnb and just said uh-oh, the tax is in Albany Municipal Code Section 4-3. Check the City website for more information or contact the Finance Department at 510-528-5730 or email at AccountsReceivable@AlbanyCA.org.
