Coding may be an essential skill for our childrens’ generation. There’s no doubt that computer science exercises students’ analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. These skills are helpful throughout life. And in education, critical thinking skills are useful in all subjects. Familiarizing your children with coding can help them in all academic areas.

This year, Albany Unified School District and the Alameda Office of Education are strongly supporting the Virtual Week of Coding with fun activities for students of all ages. Anyone from anywhere can explore acoe.org/hourofcode to find curated activities and tutorials in zones designed for every level of learner, from preschool to advanced student coders. There are activities for a wide variety of interests, from creating dance parties to building COVID-19 transmission models, from data visualization to app development labs, and a Robot Zone for all ages.

Computer Science Education Week is December 7-11 and the Hour of Code is a big part of this week. Join the fun and promote Computer Science and technology in our incredible school district! No experience is needed.

Students (and adults) will be introduced to coding by playing video games or developing their own programs. Themes include Angry Birds, Star Wars, Minecraft and so much more! They take less than one class period to complete. Please visit code.org for more information.
