Power Restored to UC Berkeley Campus

A University spokesperson said classes were affected by the outage, but professors routinely hold classes outside anyways.

Crews have restored power to the University of California at Berkeley campus this afternoon, university officials said. University spokesperson Robert Sanders said the first report of the outage was between 11:30 a.m. and noon. Power to all affected parts of the campus was on by 1:45 p.m., according to the university.

Chancellor’s professor of public policy and former U.S. Secretary of Labor in the Clinton administration Robert Reich taught classes outside Wheeler Hall during the outage, according to the university. Wheeler Hall was one of 34 buildings affected by the outage. Officials said they had expected power to be restored to all buildings by evening. Crews had power restored to some buildings at about 1:20 p.m., university officials said. Sanders said classes were affected by the outage, but professors routinely hold classes outside anyways.

Otherwise, professors could cancel and reschedule classes. Some of the buildings affected were the Alumni House, the Energy Biosciences Building, Haas Pavilion, Moffitt Library, Sather Tower and Sproul Hall, university officials said. A contractor doing routine work at a power substation cut a power line, which caused the outage, according to the university. University officials said campus utility workers successfully switched substations to restore power.

Crews continue to check building systems, such as hoods that release fumes, to be sure they are working.
