Kite, Crow Mid-Air Combat: Photos Of The Day
Captured over the course of two months, kites build a nest and then constantly defend it from crows.
BERKELEY, CA — All around us, birds and animals are in a life-and-struggle for survival. As we have sheltered-in-place from March through June because of coronavirus, many local residents have witnessed the renewal of life as birds have nested and raised their young.
Jeff Haltiner captured some absolutely amazing photos, and he shares his insight, "One of the joys of being homebound during the pandemic has been watching the birds in our backyard. Throughout the spring, we have been witness to all the wonderful antics of the small and large birds as they courted, mated, and hatched babies...this is not without peril, and the most dramatic sights were related to a pair of black-shouldered kites that took up residence in a nearby pine tree. For 2 months we watched them build a nest, bring home the daily food (mice etc) and prepare for hatchlings. But the local crows hated them, and constantly harassed and battled them."
Shown above are a crow and kite battling for air superiority, but Jeff also shared photos of the nest building process, and feeding routine.
