📰 News we're reading

1. Triple Rock Brewery In Berkeley Will Close After 40 Years (patch.com) — Longtime Berkeley favorite Triple Rock Brewery and Alehouse will close at year's end as founders John and Reid Martin retire after four decades in business. The downtown brewpub, opened in 1986 and influential in the craft beer movement, will stay open through UC Berkeley's fall semester while inviting locals to share memories on an online "Memory Wall."

2. Berkeley schools discriminated against Jewish students, state says (berkeleyscanner.com) — State education officials have ordered training, policy changes, and a schoolwide lesson at Berkeley High's Independent Study program and King Middle School after finding that pro-Palestinian posters and an assembly created a discriminatory environment for Jewish students. Local Jewish advocates say the rulings highlight broader concerns about antisemitism in Berkeley schools and are pressing the district to better protect students' safety and sense of belonging.

3. Full speed ahead? Berkeley ferry plan gets a boost (berkeleyscanner.com) — Berkeley's long-discussed electric ferry and municipal pier rebuild just got a major boost, as the state granted "judicial streamlining" to speed CEQA challenges and potentially cut years off delays. With an estimated $106 million price tag, the project would add a new ferry terminal, plaza, Bay Trail links, safer bike and pedestrian routes, and upgraded marina amenities, with construction possibly starting in 2028 if funding and approvals line up.

4. Berkeley homeless encampment infested with deadly rat urine (amedpost.com) — Berkeley officials are clearing the long-troubled homeless encampment at Eighth and Harrison after rats there were linked to leptospirosis infections that sickened two nearby RV residents, killing one. The city has issued health warnings, urged dog vaccinations, and is relocating disabled residents as crews dismantle the rat-infested site near the UC Berkeley campus.

5. Discern Your Next Faithful Step in Berkeley: A Weekend for Seminary Discernment — Grand Canyon Synod of the ELCA (gcsynod.org) — Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary is hosting a free discernment retreat in Berkeley from October 30 to November 1, 2026, for anyone exploring ministry or theological study.
