Police: Alarm Technician Person of Interest in Hidden Camera Found in Campus Bathroom

At least 50 women were secretly recorded, police officials said.

An alarm technician who worked on campus has been interviewed as a person of interest in the secret recording of more than 50 women at a University of California at Berkeley dormitory bathroom, police said today. But Lt. Marc DeCoulode said no one has been arrested in connection with the hidden camera found in a women’s staff restroom on the lower level of the Unit 1 Central Building, and the investigation into the matter may take several weeks.

The person of interest stopped working at the university on Monday, three days after the camera was discovered, according to DeCoulode. Police aren’t focusing on any other potential suspects at this time, he said. At least 50 women were secretly recorded and the number of known victims probably will grow as police review additional footage, DeCoulode said.

UC Berkeley police said the camera apparently had been in the staff restroom since late April, when a sign was posted on the public restroom of the building directing women to use the staff restroom. The staff restroom is down the hall from the public restroom, near the loading dock, police said. Maintenance staff members are checking all residence hall restrooms to see if there are any other recording devices, police said.

Campus police are asking anyone who used the dorm’s staff restroom between late April and last Friday to contact UC Berkeley police Detective Pete Odyniec at (510) 642-1606.
