The crash, which was reported at 10:20 a.m., snarled traffic on I-580 for hours.

An 89-year-old man died after a six-vehicle, chain-reaction crash on Interstate Highway 580 this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. The collision was reported at 10:20 a.m. today on westbound I-580 just east of the Strobridge Avenue exit, the CHP said.
Investigators said a 66-year-old Flintstone, Georgia, man who was driving a 2014 Chevrolet pickup truck was headed west on I-580 when, for unknown reasons, the truck struck the back of a white 2015 Mercedes, which in turn rear-ended a black 2015 Mercedes.
A 33-year-old Concord man who was driving a 2010 Ford Escape tried to swerve around the crash but struck the pickup and two other vehicles, according to the CHP. An 89-year-old man from Castro Valley who was a passenger in the white 2015 Mercedes was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he succumbed to his injuries, the CHP said.
