Free flu shot clinics are scheduled.

By Bea Karnes

The San Mateo County Health System received confirmation this week that two recent deaths were the result of influenza. The county did not release the names of the victims or the cities in which they lived.

Two other deaths were confirmed in the Bay Area, one each in San Francisco and Sonoma counties.

All of the victims were under the age of 65. Only flu deaths in people under 65 are reported to the state.

Dr. Scott Morrow, San Mateo County Health Officer, recommends that everyone get a flu shot. In a prepared statement, Dr. Morrow said, “Even though the flu shot is not a perfect match for all of this year’s flu viruses, it still remains the best defense against the flu. The vaccine will still protect you against other strains of flu that are circulating, and can reduce the severity of flu symptoms if you do get sick.”

In addition to getting vaccinated, the county says it’s important to practice good hand washing and health habits. People who are ill can help stop the spread of germs:

• Limit contact with others—stay home from work or school

• Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing

• Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based rub

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth

Symptoms of the flu include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue.

San Mateo County residents can get a free flu shot and get help enrolling in affordable health coverage on Saturday, January 24 at Serramonte Del Rey, 699 Seramonte Blvd. in Daly City, and Saturday, January 31 at the College of San Mateo, College Center Building, 1700 West Hillsdale Blvd. in San Mateo. Both events will be held from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm.
