PANCAKES FOR PATRIOTS
On Saturday, May 20, 2017 (Armed Forces Day), San Mateo County First Responders Lions Club will be sponsoring “PANCAKES FOR PATRIOTS” at Hillsborough Town Hall, 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. This is a fundraiser for the Hillsborough Adopt-a-Unit Program in support of the United States Army 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and now Cameroon and Djiboti, Africa. Proceeds will benefit the ‘Postage For Packages Campaign’.
Adopted by the City of San Bruno, Alpha Company “Red Currahee”, 1-506 Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, deployed to Garoua, Cameroon, Africa in support of USARAF (U.S. Army Africa Regionally Aligned Forces). As in Iraq and Afghanistan, our military trains, advises and assists the African military and police.
Adopted by the City of Burlingame, Bravo Company "Bushmasters", 1-327 Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, deployed to Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti in support of Operation Enduring Freedom – Horn of Africa. Camp Lemonnier is a U.S. Naval Base next to Djibouti’s main airport from which units of all U.S. military services execute a wide variety of operational and training missions. They assumed the East Africa Response Force (EARF) mission and serve as an alert force to protect U.S. Embassies and American citizens in East Africa. Camp Lemonnier itself and the host nation Djibouti continue to be safe locations from which to live, train, and prepare.
As a humanitarian mission, both units support orphanages of children who have been abandoned or whose parents have been killed by Boko Haram terrorists. As we know in America, without education and guidance, youth may stray to evil. So our soldiers are building desks and chairs, bunk beds, classrooms, playing soccer and basketball with students so that young Africans have the opportunity to learn and have promising futures.
For many years, Hillsborough and neighboring communities have participated in supporting our deployed military with care packages of snacks and hygiene products. The most meaningful addition is a letter to a soldier that greets him/her as the box is opened—a touch of America and home—that lifts spirits and morale as high as the clouds. Support those who have volunteered to serve and sacrifice for our freedom.
Join friends and community members, enjoy breakfast, write a note to a soldier, and know that this small effort means the world to those helping nations while serving our country.
Please share with your family and friends. Hope to see you there!
Best regards,
/s/ LeAnn Thornton
