Peninsula Shelter Waiving Fees For Senior Cats, Dogs

For Valentine's Day, the Peninsula Humane Society wants to set you up with your new — albeit older — furry companion.

BURLINGAME, CA — Peninsula residents looking for their next pet — one that might not need as much training through the first years of life — are in luck. The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA is waiving adoption fees for dogs and cats in their "senior" years: ages seven and older. The special continues throughout the month of February.

It's all part of the organization's "Senior Sweetheart Adoption Event."

“Adopting an older animal has many benefits, including not having to kitten or puppy proof a home,” said PHS/SPCA’s Communications Manager Buffy Martin Tarbox. “A senior animal’s personality is already developed so there won’t be any surprises about temperament.”

The spokeswoman said there are many senior animals at the society awaiting adoption, "and we hope this event will showcase the benefits of adopting older animals."

One such furry friend is pictured with this article. Ariel is a 13-year-old calico cat who has been waiting at the shelter for more than five months for her new home, according to Tarbox.

“Even though the adoption fees are waived on senior cats and dogs, we will still be following our strict and rigorous adoption processes since we want to make permanent matches,” Tarbox added.
