Peninsula Weather Alert: Forecasters Say Strong Winds, Rain and Hail Possible During Next 2 Days

Time to dig out those rain boots!

Forecasters are predicting strong winds, rain and hail in the Bay Area throughout Monday and Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

South winds will pick up Monday and rain will spread across the area late in the day and Monday night, with heavy rain possible into Tuesday morning.

Showers and thunderstorms are forecast for Monday and Tuesday evening. Heavier showers and thunderstorms may produce small hail Tuesday. Forecasters expect snow to fall at elevations above 3,500 feet, with accumulations at elevations above 4,000 feet.

Here’s the detailed forecast for the Peninsula (San Mateo, to be precise), courtesy of the National Weather Service:

  • This Afternoon: Cloudy, with a high near 63. South southwest wind 11 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
  • Tonight: Showers, mainly after 11pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 47. South southeast wind 11 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Tuesday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce small hail and heavy rain. High near 61. Light west southwest wind increasing to 12 to 17 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Tuesday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 11pm, then a slight chance of showers. Some of the storms could produce small hail. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 46. West wind 11 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

South winds may become strong and gusty starting Monday afternoon though early Tuesday. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph are possible near the coast and the hills, especially at night. Dry and mild weather should return by Wednesday afternoon.
