Belmont police asked for the public’s help Monday in finding a man who they say broke into a local apartment building garage, and tried to steal two vehicles.

According to Belmont Police Captain Patrick Halleran, the thief used a crow bar to break into the lobby of the building in the 1100 block of Ralston Avenue at around 11:35 p.m.

“The suspect then went into the garage and attempted to steal a Ford Explorer and a Ford Taurus from the garage,” Halleran said in a news release issued Monday. “The suspect was unsuccessful and used a garage door remote control from one of the vehicles to exit.”

Though he wasn’t successful in getting either of those two cars, police do think he managed to steal a third, elsewhere in town.

“That same night, between 8:30 p.m. Friday and 6:30 a.m. Saturday, a white 2001 Ford E250 van with an orange roof rack, was stolen from the 800 block of South Road, which is in the same area as the apartment complex,” Halleran said. “It is believed that the same suspect took the van after being unsuccessful at the apartment building.”

Police described the suspect as a bald, white man in his late 20s to early 30s. He was clean shaven with “numerous tattoos” and was wearing a black t-shirt and baggy pants.

Security cameras inside the parking garage caught the suspect in action. Two videos can be seen below.
