Chabot Guard David Hector Lands With Southwest Baptist University
Former Moreau Catholic star was first-team all conference, honorable mention All State
Chabot College sophomore guard David Hector III took another step toward his goal of playing professional basketball by signing with Division II Southwest Baptist University (Missouri).
Hector, a former Moreau Catholic High star, amassed 15 double-doubles last season, averaging 15.1 points and 9.4 rebounds a game. He shot 36 percent from 3-point range.
He will join an SBU Bearcats team that went 20-10 last season, 11-3 at home.
Hector was impressed when SBU head coach Aaron Niven reached out to him during the recruiting process.
“He stated early on they really wanted me, and I wanted to get out there,” Hector said. “… I just came back from a visit, and I signed when I was out there.”
Hector helped the Glads to their first conference championship in 20 years; they shared the Coast-North title with City College of San Francisco.
Chabot head coach Keenan McMiller describes the 6-foot-4 Hector as a “bull and the best guard rebounder in the state.”
Opponents couldn’t relax when Hector was on the court. His defensive rebounds often led to points for Chabot.
“Ever since I was a kid LeBron (James) has been my favorite player and he likes to take a rebound and go coast to coast, so I just try to emulate that as best as possible,” Hector said. “It’s hard for the defense to guard that, if someone gets a rebound and goes all the way, so, yeah, I kind of pride myself in rebounding.”
That mindset was also clear in high school. He averaged 12 points and seven rebounds as a senior on a powerful Moreau Catholic team, and then Hector headed south and played at Balboa Prep in San Diego. Unfortunately, he suffered a torn meniscus in 2019 and had surgery in July but was back on the court by Oct. 1, in time for Balboa Prep’s 36-game season.
“It was a struggle. I was basically out there on one leg,” he recalled of the experience. “Probably should have sat out the whole year, but it was a great experience. I learned a lot.”
He next competed at CCSF, a perennial state power, for a season before transferring to Chabot, where everything seemed to click. He was first-team All-Coast North Conference and Honorable Mention All-State. He also earned an AA degree as an honor student with a 3.7 GPA.
After an uneven start to the season, the Glads (21-9) roared to a 13-1 conference mark. They split conference games with CCSF and swept district sister school Las Positas. They opened the CCCAA NorCal playoffs by beating Los Medanos 89-82 before falling to host San Jose 82-68 in the regional finals.
“My experience at Chabot has been good, really good,” Hector said. “Coach Keenan has supported me throughout the year and the coaching staff as well.”
Of course, Hector and his teammates were disappointed to fall just short of advancing to the state’s Elite Eight.
“Other than that I would say it was a pretty positive year,” Hector said … “First 20-win season since coach Keenan has been there, so I’d say it was a pretty successful year.”
He wants to earn his bachelor’s degree at SBU and eventually play pro ball. If basketball goes away, he is also interested in a career as a firefighter.
Now it’s time for the ‘bull’ to bring his gung-ho style to Missouri.
