Slain Hayward Police Officer to be Honored in Washington, D.C.

National Police Week 2016 runs from May 15-21.

Police officers from all over the country are converging on Washington, D.C. to honor 252 fallen officers, including 123 who died in the line of duty last year. Some were killed in traffic accidents while others were gunned down in cold blood.

Among the officers to be honored - Hayward Sgt. Scott Lunger, killed during a traffic stop last summer.

National Police Week 2016 officially runs from May 15-21. However, some events are already underway including the Police Unity Tour bike ride. Earlier this week, the Hayward Police Department posted on its Facebook page, “This past weekend 23 members from the Hayward Police Department flew to New Jersey to take part of the Police Unity Tour (PUT). The PUT was created in 1997 to raise awareness of Law Enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty. Our 21 riders and 2 support personnel will join hundreds of other officers from all over the country in a grueling 4 day ride covering over 300 miles. The PUT is also a fundraiser to support the families of fallen officers.”

The Facebook page, which still features Sgt. Lunger’s funeral as its cover photo, has chronicled the group’s progress through the week.

The names of 252 fallen officers will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
