The Contra Costa Youth Summit sponsored by Supervisor Federal Glover has switched location and will feature some new workshops along with the popular features of past summits.

“This year’s summit has the theme of ‘Its Starts With Us!,” said Supervisor Federal Glover. “I want young people to know the possibilities for their future and that they can do things right now to impact their future and the community they live in.

“You can make a difference in your community, no matter what age you are. We have examples in eastern Contra Costa,” said Glover, referring to Bay Point’s Riverview Middle School students who strengthened the county ordinance alcopop sales.

The last several years, the summit has been held at Los Medanos College but this year, it is moving to Pittsburg High School.

Like previous years, we want to unite sixth through twelfth grade youth with local dignitaries, mentors and resources for an incredible day complete with self exploration, education and entertainment.

“LMC has been a great host, but I just wanted to try a new venue,” said Glover. “With the high school’s Creative Arts Building, Little Theater, cafeteria, gym, the enclosed central quad and 50 classrooms at our disposal, we can expand our offerings.”

The keynote speaker is Shaun Derik, who was so well received last year.

“He captured the youths’ attention with his singing, dancing and inspirational message of not giving up and pursuing one’s passion,” said Glover.

The summit will open registration at 8 a.m. and run to 4 p.m. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Last year, the summit attracted students from all over the county. The first 250 youth who register online will be eligible to receive a summer bus pass. To register or for more information, link to the website www.d5youthsummit.com.
