Fin Restaurant Rocks on Washington Blvd.

Progressive Tapas Bar with a NYC Vibe Makes this Place Special

I’m a little slow this morning after a festive evening at Fin Restaurant in Culver City. This Asian tapas place breathes new life into the "West Washington” corridor of Culver City, which has reinvented itself in recent years. Thanks to places like Fin, the area is now clamoring to be the culinary go-to place of Culver City.

Established in 2013, Fin replaces the kitschy Mi Ranchito and brings to the neighborhood a groovy progressive vibe. Stepping inside, we were immediately transported to NYC or SF, with its monochromatic modern flair, reminding me of my days working for Wired Magazine.

Hip waiters are accommodating, but not intrusive. Our handsome man-bun boy was Ron, who gladly guided us until co-owner Michael Flanagan took the helm. Introducing us to several small bites, Michael's selections exceeded many creations I’ve enjoyed at other places. Is this Matsuhisa west? Perhaps.

Let’s start with the drinks. I usually opt for sake at an Asian place, but thought it’s time to broaden my palate with something new. Shiso Rockin -Rock Sake, Vodka, Lime Juice, Muddle Cucumber & Shiso Leaf-Wow!

My partner’s libation was dynamic as well, paring nicely with the medley of tapas to follow. Hello Kitty -Ketel One Vodka, Pom Juice, Lemon, Agave, Muddled Berries-Beautiful!

This is a great place for sharing. You can opt for smaller plates or larger ones, but you owe it to yourself to swap bites. There’s too much going on with each dish to forfeit a sample.

There are also many “secret menu” items which are not on the menu, so if you’re feeling adventurous, allow Michael to steer you toward something new.

Particularly notable from their regular menu was the Miso Black Cod, and their Jicama Fish Tacos. We also loved the Rock Shrimp Tempura, a crunchy sin of a dish, the Baked Crab Hand Roll, and the Crispy Albacore Onion Sashimi. Dig deep on this one to uncover some delicious surprises.

Dessert was to die for-A Flourless Chocolate Cake, paired with Black Sesame Ice Cream.

Still feeling festive? Then head behind the restaurant to their speakeasy, aptly called The Alley, infused with the gentle flair of designer Laura Irvin, whose creative expertise infuses an inviting air to both the Alley and Fin. At the Alley, you can truly get lost in time while the mixologist works his magic at the bar.
