Water Polo Player Suspended From San Jose State Following Sex Assault Accusations

BREAKING: The SJSU student was neither charged nor arrested as police investigate the separate incidents that allegedly occurred off campus.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA – A San Jose State University water polo player accused of sexually assaulting two female students off campus last month has been suspended from the school, a college spokeswoman said today.

The unidentified student is suspected of sexually assaulting the two students on separate occasions during Labor Day weekend, university spokeswoman Pat Lopes Harris said.

College officials were notified of one of the alleged assaults sometime between Sept. 3 and 5 and the other on Sept. 19, Harris said.

The incidents took place outside campus within San Jose police's jurisdiction, according to Harris.

The school hasn't named the suspect because he hasn't been arrested or charged with the alleged assaults, she said.

San Jose police has sent its case to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office, which will determine if criminal charges will be filed.

The water polo player, an international student, was placed on interim suspension on Sept. 22, barring him from educational and extracurricular activities and living on campus, according to Harris.

The school is communicating with police on the case and believe the suspected student has returned to his home country, Harris said.

University officials have taken steps to address student conduct and comply with Title IX, a federal law listed in the Civil Rights of 1964 that bans sexual discrimination at schools, she said.
