Danville Farmers Market Closes Through March: Coronavirus Woes

Given concerns of the spread of COVID-19, "a temporary suspension of the farmers markets is the most prudent action," a town official said.

DANVILLE, CA — In a decision made in the "best interest of the community" given current coronavirus concerns, the Town Of Danville is suspending the weekly Farmers Market through the end of March, officials said today.

Contra Costa Health Services and the California Department of Public Health this week released guidelines aimed at mitigating the spread of the COVID-19, with guidelines advising canceling non-essential gatherings of more than 250 people and using "social distancing."

Economic Development Manager Jill Bergman said the farmers' market decision, made with the Pacific Coast Farmers’ Market Association and with the health guidelines in mind, "was in the best interest of the community."

“Danville’s priority is the health and safety of our residents and our business community,” Bergman said. “A temporary suspension of the farmers markets is the most prudent action.”

The market typically is held year-round on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Railroad and Prospect avenues.

Town and PCFMA officials will readdress the situation at the beginning of April to determine further action, she said.
