DANVILLE, CA — Seven Danville teens raised $1,000 to donate 10,000 bars of soap to struggling at at-risk East Bay families.

The high schoolers founded organization East Bay Corona to support health care workers and low-income families with a lack of resources, said founder and president Siya Sharma, Monte Vista High School senior.

Sharma and her friends were spurred to act after their worlds changed in March. School went online. Health care workers were without critical supplies.

She found her motivation in her desire to help connect people with resources.

"It really hurt my heart ... I felt so helpless at the moment," she said. "It felt so earth-shattering."

In April, the group donated 200 meals to health care workers in partnership with restaurants. From there, they raised the $1,000 to purchase 10,000 soap bars to donate to Bay Area Rescue Mission in Richmond.

They have dreams of expanding efforts to combat food insecurity by bolstering food bank supplies.
