Reutlinger Staff Graduate from "Opening Minds through Art" Training
Fosters communication in elderly.

Five members of The Reutlinger Community’s staff graduated from an intensive three day training as facilitators of the program, “Opening Minds through Art” (OMA). OMA’s mission is to build bridges across age and cognitive barriers through art. The training was founded by Elizabeth Lokon, PhD, through the Scripps Gerontology Center, Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
The five member team will train volunteers who will be working with elder residents 1:1, offering friendship, while helping them with their creative process. The art projects are specifically designed to encourage communication, relationships, and the excitement of watching the artistic process unfold. Each session culminates in a multi-layered abstract work of art that is a self-expression of each elder resident. The works of art will be framed and displayed in an exhibition of art for the residents, families, volunteers, staff, and the general public.
