Student Accused of Writing ‘Racist and Homophobic Graffiti’ on Bus Will Face Disciplinary, Criminal Action

DANVILLE, CA — A student suspected of writing racist and homophobic graffiti discovered on a TRAFFIX bus that serves Monte Vista High School will face disciplinary and criminal action, school district officials said.

Police investigators and school administrators say they have identified the student allegedly responsible for the graffiti. The student’s name will not be released and school officials say they cannot share information about the disciplinary actions taken in accordance with the education code.

The bus incident follows the discovery of race-related graffiti found in a boys’ bathroom on the school campus before Thanksgiving break. A student discovered the words “whites” and “colored” written above urinals on campus. Officials reported the incident to police and removed the graffiti. In response to the incident, officials held a school-wide assembly and a lunch meeting in the gym.

An incident of race-related graffiti reported at California High School on Nov. 18 prompted the temporary closure of the bathrooms and a police investigation, bringing the number of Cal High incidents to four since October. In response to the graffiti, the district held a meeting for parents that night.

School officials said they are continuing to investigate all of the race-related graffiti incidents at both Monte Vista and California high schools.
