Who Has The Best Chinese Food? Yup, San Gabriel Valley!

Was there ever any doubt?

Excuse me while I nurture our collective ego for a bit. But it seems the Los Angeles area, especially the San Gabriel Valley, rocks the Chinese cuisine world.

David R. Chan says so. The LA-based attorney/accountant ranked the top Chinese food restaurants. All of them are in California and a good chunk of them are in the San Gabriel Valley.

Who is David R. Chan? According to LA Weekly, he had eaten at more than 6,000 restaurants in his quest to find the best.

LA Weekly writer Clarissa Wei writes, “He doesn't use chopsticks and doesn't speak Chinese. He has been to Asia just five times. He's a third-generation American (his paternal Toishanese grandfather immigrated to the United States in 1900). He's been on a low-carb and low-sugar diet. And he's never once lived in the San Gabriel Valley.”

And yet, “he visits the San Gabriel Valley roughly twice a week and avoids eating at the same restaurants over again,” Wei wrote. Read her entire article here.

Chan listed his top 10 Chinese Food locations in a posting for Asian Society blog.

“As you see, all 10 of the restaurants I listed are in California, most of them are in the Los Angeles area, and most of them serve Hong Kong style food,” Chan wrote. “That might lead one to believe that I am biased towards restaurants in the city that I live that serve a particular cuisine. However, that is absolutely not the case. I've been to all 50 states and eaten at 300 Chinese restaurants in New York City alone. Virtually all observers, particularly Chinese themselves, agree that the best Chinese food comes out of Hong Kong.”
