The officers were injured during a traffic stop last Wednesday afternoon on Fremont Boulevard near Washington Boulevard.

Police said 44-year-old Gerald Villabrille, Jr., of San Jose, was driving a stolen truck when he was pulled over and backed into a patrol car before opening fire on a relatively new officer, critically wounding him.

The second victim, a detective with 10 years of experience, was shot one time around 10 minutes after the first incident.

He was reported to be in stable condition, and according to police continues to improve.

Police said Villabrille, Jr. fled to a home after the incident where he later shot himself in the head.
