UPDATE: Niles Canyon Road Closes Again: Tree Down

The stretch of Highway 84 had reopened Wednesday evening after massive storm cleanup.

FREMONT, CA – UPDATE: THURSDAY, FEB, 23, 4 p.m.

Niles Canyon Road is closed by Caltrans again this afternoon -- this time due to a fallen tree, according to police. The canyon possibly can reopen at 5 p.m., but that is the earliest estimate, the Fremont Police Department said.

"City streets leading to the I-680 corridor are heavily congested this afternoon," the agency said at 3:41 p.m. "Commuters are advised to stay on freeways. Please be patient and drive safe."

Niles Canyon Road, the stretch of Highway 84 closed since Monday due to storm debris, has reopened, the Fremont Police Department said.

But motorists are still urged to proceed with care. "Please drive with caution through the Canyon as rock and mud could still fall due to the saturated soil," the agency said late Wednesday.

California Department of Transportation crews spent the past two days clearing the roadway of trees, rocks and mud that followed heavy storms in the area. To see photos of the debris, click here.
