Holistic approach to education keeps Fusion Academy South Bay students focused and grounded

Yoga Provides Middle School and High School Students with Personal Empowerment

As students’ interests evolve, so too must schools to keep them engaged in their education. To further enhance the uniqueness of its curriculum, Fusion Academy South Bay, a college-prep, alternative private school offering a customized one-to-one learning experience, has implemented a yoga program on campus.

While yoga is ideal for achieving a strong body, educators at Fusion Academy also know that yoga helps calm minds and instill mental discipline of lifelong value.  Taught by Carrie Bravick, a certified yoga instructor, the new yoga program provides students with a gateway to personal empowerment and transformation.

“Yoga serves as a vehicle to help students in all aspects of their lives,” said Bravick. “Through becoming more connected to the body and breath, they learn to observe the habits that are holding them back, and are able to see themselves from a new perspective. Teenagers especially are in a state of development where many of them have limited body awareness and their emotions are fluctuating constantly. Yoga gives them a foundation that they can come back to again and again when life and mind are in chaos.”

In addition to increased body awareness, deep breathing exercises result in more oxygenated blood flowing to the brain to keep students focused. It can help them manage debilitating anxiety or provide them with the tools to fall asleep easier at night so they are more rested and alert during the day. Tiredness and anxiety are just two examples of mental and physical states that can affect a student’s overall well-being, as well as their academic performance.

“The introduction of yoga at Fusion is as much for the students’ personal development as it is for their physical education,” said Tracy-Lyn Forney, head of school. “Carrie’s instruction teaches them to control their body, and, in turn, to control their mind. Students learn they have the power to make large and small changes that result in profound differences in their lives.”
