Rise and shine, Huntington Beach, and happy National Rubber Ducky Day! Let's get this Thursday started off right. Here are the most important things going on today in town.

Officials anticipate finishing Bluff Top Park upgrades by February. Also, the Huntington Beach Union High School District released its latest COVID numbers. Finally, the Orange County Power Authority may not save you money.

First, today's weather:

Periods of sun. High: 66 Low: 52.

Here are the top five stories in Huntington Beach today:

  1. Work at Bluff Top Park is speeding along. Officials anticipate wrapping it up in February. Look for the new wooden lodge poles and a resurfaced asphalt path that runs from 11th Street to Seapoint Street. (Surf City Break)
  2. The Huntington Beach Union High School District released its latest COVID numbers on Monday. Edison HS, with 2,474 has a confirmed 4.49% of its population test positive. Marina HS, with 2,616 individuals, has the lowest rate at 2.1%. The largest number of students testing positive is at Fountain Valley HS (131) while the lowest number is at Valley Vista HS. (HBUHSD)
  3. The Orange County Power Authority announced its rates on Tuesday, and HB residents might not see the savings they thought were coming. Residents "will be paying $50 more a year for their electricity bills." Initially, HB was promised energy rates that would be lower than Edison's. The Authority is having a difficult time breaking even with Edison's rates. "The rates will also change after Edison announces its new rate hike in March." (Voice of OC)
  4. The California Credit Union is urging Orange County residents to apply for its 2022 Student Scholarship Program. The application period opened Tuesday and will go through April 8. The scholarships will be announced on May 2. (News Santa Ana)
  5. We learned Wednesday that the State has given HB Hospitals the green light for allowing "nurses and other health workers to stay on the job if they tested positive but were asymptomatic." While critics consider this step controversial, the State reasons that rising numbers of COVID-19 hospitalizations coupled with a labor shortage merit this approach. At this time, the plan is for this temporary permission to end on February 1. (Patch)
