Stay in the loop about everything going down in town with the Huntington Beach Daily.

Good morning, people of Huntington Beach! It's me again, Sylvia, your host of the Huntington Beach Daily.

If you time it right, you can talk to a 99-year-old WWII veteran. Also, the city council wants to redo Main Street and Mayor Carr thinks you should be stoked. Finally, check the lox in the fridge.

First, today's weather:

Cool with some brightening. High: 65 Low: 53.

Here are the top stories in Huntington Beach today:

  1. Neighbors came together on Wednesday to cheer Joe Bush, who will turn 100 on May 22, 2022. The organizer of the event describes him as "a wonderful 99-year-old man, WWII vet . . . (who) shares wonderful stories of his service." Organizers made up t-shirts, and Mr. Bush was delighted. If you want to benefit from his wisdom or talk to a WWII veteran, be at the "bridge at Bolsa Chica State Beach from 8 to 9 am a few days a week." (HB News)
  2. The City Council voted Tuesday 6 to 1 to extend the temporary closure of Main Street and "continue assessing plans for an all-new redesign of Main Street." Council members in favor of this idea envision the design of an outdoor plaza "complete with outdoor restaurant dining, art, new landscaping, and lighting." Council member Peterson opposed the measure because there was no outreach to affected businesses. Mayor Carr responded by suggesting that "quite honestly, if I had a business down there, I would be totally stoked if the city was looking at investing millions of dollars downtown right now." (OC Tribune)
  3. There's been a recall of salmon lox. Reported on Saturday, it affects products from the Oregon Lox Company of Eugene. The firm issued a recall of various brands of "Wild Cold Smoked Keta Salmon Lox" because of "potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination." If you're planning on putting lox on the Thanksgiving table, check its origin. (Los Cerritos News)
  4. Remember when the Orange County supervisors said they would give residents 10 days to review the proposed election maps before making a final decision on Monday? They don't either. On Tuesday, these same supervisors "made a sudden round of extra changes" that only give you three days to review them. Supervisors Bartlett, Do, and Foley said that "the changes were needed to fix lingering problems." Apparently, the maps public commenters liked are not those that were advanced and modified. (Voice of OC)
  5. The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) announced Tuesday that it wants your input on how to turn around its truancy issue. There are $400,000 on the table that the Department will spend on the best proposal. The goal is to "boost attendance by re-engaging chronically absent students and families with their school communities." You have until November 30 to submit your proposal. (OCDE)
