📰 News we're reading

• California's record breaking October heat wave: 4 things to know (sfchronicle.com) — Huntington Beach is expected to see unusually hot October weather, with temperatures soaring into the 90s and warm nights in the 70s through at least Tuesday. The prolonged heat wave is breaking duration records across Southern California, raising health and fire concerns as Santa Ana winds pick up, especially inland, and major sports events and festivals adjust to the extreme conditions.

• Three teams are still unbeaten (orangecountytribune.com) — Huntington Beach High stayed perfect at 6-0 with a tight 24-21 Delta League win over El Modena, keeping local football fans buzzing. Other nearby programs like Orange, Rancho Alamitos, and Ocean View also strengthened their records, while Pacifica and Garden Grove stumbled in league play, reshaping early title races across West Orange County.

• California attorney general: Who's running and why it matters (laist.com) — California's attorney general race could shape how aggressively the state enforces housing and criminal justice laws that have already pressured cities like Huntington Beach to add affordable units. Republican candidate Michael Gates, a former Huntington Beach city attorney, is challenging Democrat incumbent Rob Bonta, arguing for a different approach to crime and state mandates that would directly affect local policies.
