Durante el Mes de Concientizaci&oacute;n sobre la Enfermedad Arterial Perif&eacute;rica (EAP), el Dr. Pushpinder Sivia, cirujano vascular certificado, recomienda prestar atenci&oacute;n a las se&ntilde;ales que nos dan las piernas y los pies. A veces, pueden indicar un problema de circulaci&oacute;n.
Es muy com&uacute;n sentir dolor en las piernas y pensar:
&ldquo;Es por la edad.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Seguro es artritis.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Camin&eacute; demasiado.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Ya se me va a quitar.&rdquo;
Pero no siempre es as&iacute;.
Si le duelen, pesan o se le cansan las piernas cuando camina y se siente mejor cuando descansa, podr&iacute;a ser una se&ntilde;al de <a href="https://empirevein.com/en/book-online/?utm_source=CV/Riverside%20&amp;utm_medium=pr_article&amp;utm_campaign=PAD_ES2026" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">enfermedad arterial perif&eacute;rica (EAP).</a>
La EAP ocurre cuando las arterias se estrechan y no permiten que suficiente sangre llegue a las piernas y los pies.
En Estados Unidos, millones de personas viven con EAP y muchas ni siquiera saben que la tienen. En casos avanzados, la falta de circulaci&oacute;n puede causar heridas que no sanan y aumentar el riesgo de amputaci&oacute;n.

Tambi&eacute;n puede notar:

No piense autom&aacute;ticamente que estos cambios son solamente parte de envejecer. La circulaci&oacute;n de sus piernas tambi&eacute;n puede decirnos mucho sobre su salud.
La EAP generalmente ocurre por la acumulaci&oacute;n de placa dentro de las arterias.
Y no necesariamente afecta solamente las piernas. La acumulaci&oacute;n de placa tambi&eacute;n puede afectar las arterias que llevan sangre al coraz&oacute;n y al cerebro.
Por eso, las personas con EAP tambi&eacute;n pueden tener un mayor riesgo de ataque card&iacute;aco o derrame cerebral.
&iquest;Qui&eacute;n tiene mayor riesgo?
Es especialmente importante estar atento si usted:
<ul>
<li>Fuma o fum&oacute; anteriormente</li>
<li>Tiene diabetes</li>
<li>Tiene presi&oacute;n alta</li>
<li>Tiene colesterol alto</li>
<li>Tiene enfermedad renal</li>
<li>Tiene problemas del coraz&oacute;n o de circulaci&oacute;n</li>
<li>Es mayor de 50 a&ntilde;os y tiene otros factores de riesgo</li>
</ul>
Haga algo sencillo: qu&iacute;tese los calcetines y revise sus pies.
Mire sus pies con atenci&oacute;n.
&iquest;Un pie est&aacute; m&aacute;s fr&iacute;o que el otro?
&iquest;Ha cambiado el color de su piel?
&iquest;Tiene una herida que no sana?
&iquest;Le duelen las pantorrillas cuando camina, pero mejora cuando descansa?
Su cuerpo puede estar tratando de decirle algo.
Detectar la EAP puede ser m&aacute;s sencillo de lo que piensa
Una de las pruebas que se puede utilizar para detectar problemas de circulaci&oacute;n es el &iacute;ndice tobillo-brazo (ITB).
Es una prueba sencilla que compara la presi&oacute;n arterial del tobillo con la presi&oacute;n arterial del brazo para ayudar a determinar si la sangre est&aacute; llegando adecuadamente a las piernas.
&iquest;Y si encuentran un problema de circulaci&oacute;n?
Hay diferentes maneras de tratar la EAP dependiendo de qu&eacute; tan avanzada est&eacute;.
El tratamiento puede incluir ejercicio, dejar de fumar, controlar la diabetes, la presi&oacute;n arterial y el colesterol, adem&aacute;s de medicamentos.
En algunos casos, pueden recomendarse procedimientos m&iacute;nimamente invasivos para ayudar a mejorar el flujo de sangre hacia las piernas, como angioplastia, stents, tratamientos para remover la placa o litotricia intravascular (IVL).
