Safest, Least Safe Cities In California: List

Only five California cities were named in the top 50 of WalletHub's "2017's Safest Cities in America"​ list.​

Beautiful beaches? Check. Wonderful weather? Check. When it comes to safety, however, California can't quite check it off a list, according to a new study by WalletHub.

The finance website's latest report ranks the safest cities across the country and many California cities did not make the cut. In fact, 43 U.S. cities beat out Irvine, the safest city in California, according to the study.

Only five California cities were named in the top 50 of WalletHub's "2017's Safest Cities in America" list.

Irvine, which has the fewest assaults pew capita, came in at No. 44, according to the report. Rancho Cucamonga ranked at No. 46, Fremont followed at No. 48, Glendale came in at No. 49 and Chula Vista checked in at No. 50.

The study looked at 182 cities, including the top 150 cities with the largest populations, across 35 key indicators of safety. Analysts examined home and community safety, financial safety, and natural disaster risk factors.

California's biggest cities are among the least safe, according to the study. San Diego ranked at No. 91, Sacramento at No. 110, San Francisco at No. 114, San Jose at No. 120 and Los Angeles at No. 143.

What are the least safe cities in California? In Northern California, it's Oakland, which ranked No. 163. San Bernardino in Southern California is one of the least safe cities in the country at No. 180.

Curious about the safest and least safe neighborhoods in the nation? Nashua, New Hampshire, ranked as the safest city in the country, followed by South Burlington, Vermont, and Warwick, Rhode Island, according to the report.

On the opposite end of the list, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, ranked as the least safe city, followed by St. Louis, Missouri, and San Bernardino.
