RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — A man was killed Tuesday night as he tried to cross a rural Southwest Riverside County road and he was struck by a vehicle, the California Highway Patrol reports. Now, the CHP is looking for the driver of that vehicle.

It happened around 8:15 p.m. in the area of SR-74 and Greenwald Avenue, according to CHP Officer Mike Lassig.

"The pedestrian attempted to cross from the north right shoulder to the center median when he was struck in the westbound #1 lane by an unknown vehicle," Lassig said in a news release. "After the traffic collision, the unknown vehicle fled the scene to an unknown location."

The 65-year-old man, who has not yet been publicly identified, was wearing dark clothes and there are no street lights in the area, Lassig said.

"CHP Officers arrived on scene and contacted the male pedestrian in the back of an ambulance," Lassig said. "Upon contact, CHP Officers detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his person."
