Person In RivCo CCW Weapons-Training Class Shot In Leg By Deputy
The incident, reported as an accidental shooting at Riverside County Sheriff Department's gun range, is under investigation, officials said.
RIVERSIDE, CA — An investigation is underway after an individual in training to renew a concealed-carry weapons permit earlier this month accidentally was shot in the leg by a deputy checking the person's firearm at a Riverside gun range, according to authorities.
The person was enrolled in a "Concealed Carry Weapons Qualification and Renewal Course" Aug. 10 at the Ben Clark Training Center’s Gun Range on Davis Avenue, operated and led by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, when the shooting occurred, officials said Friday.
During the weapons-renewal process, department staff inspects the applicants' handguns to ensure no unauthorized modifications were performed and that firearms are in operable condition, deputies said.

"All participants are instructed to unload their handguns before the inspection process begins," the department said. "The inspection includes a trigger-pull test to determine the amount of force needed to fully cycle the pistol. A CCW holder presented their firearm to a range staff, and during the inspection, the firearm discharged striking the civilian in the leg."
The injured citizen was treated at the scene then taken to a local hospital for the wound, which was deemed non-life-threatening, deputies said.
