Help Homeless Kids Get A Summer To Remember
OC Rescue Mission will hold its 7th annual "Summer to Remember" program for homeless kids.
ORANGE COUNTY, CA — Summer camp can provide memories that will last a lifetime, but for many homeless children that opportunity is just one of many that will forever pass them by. This year, the Orange County Rescue Mission is asking for the community’s help to provide funding for its 7th annual “Summer to Remember” program, a comprehensive ten-week summer camp that focuses on academics, social engagement, recreation and fine arts for children living at the Village of Hope, a transitional living facility for homeless individuals and families.
Starting at just $7.10 per day per child, community members can choose to sponsor one day, one week, or even the entire summer for a homeless child. The program, which begins on June 3 and is designed for children ages 5 to 12, provides children with STEM-based learning activities, as well as a curriculum that focuses on building solid foundations in science, technology, engineering, math and reading.
“Children who have experienced homelessness often face mental and social challenges," says Jim Palmer, President of Orange County Rescue Mission. "Homeless children are twice as likely to develop a learning disability or to repeat a grade. However, with financial support from the local community for educational programs such as our "Summer to Remember" program, those circumstances can, and often do, change dramatically.”

“This is one of the most anticipated programs of the year for our students,” says Palmer. “The program's locations and activities allow students to truly enjoy their summer break while learning new things.”
