Grant Fire Burns 640 Acres

The Grant Fire sent thick smoke across lanes of traffic Sunday night.

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — A fire in Alameda County near Livermore burned 640 acres Sunday night, prompting a major freeway closure. The fire, which was fully contained by Monday morning, jumped the freeway, fire officials said.

The Grant Fire was reported near eastbound Interstate 580 west of Grant Line Road just after 5 p.m., according to fire officials.

Alameda County Fire Department and Cal Fire crews responded to battle the blaze. The California Highway Patrol assisted with traffic control. A Sig-Alert was issued at 6:30 p.m. due to the flames and thick smoke. Drivers said they were forced to turn around and find alternate routes to get past the blaze. CHP officers escorted drivers over the Altamont Pass.

No injuries were reported. Alameda County fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said all county units have been released from the blaze as of 12:25 a.m. today and Cal Fire's Santa Clara unit will be leading the investigation into the fire and continuing firefighting efforts.
