UPDATE: Hazmat Spill Closes Altamont Pass Road, SigAlert Issued

The California Highway Patrol received a report shortly after 10 a.m.

Crews are at the scene of a hazardous materials incident in the Altamont area of unincorporated Alameda County that has prompted a road closure this afternoon, authorities said. The California Highway Patrol received a report shortly after 10 a.m. about barrels of materials that were dumped in a creek along Altamont Pass near Carroll Road.

The report indicated that there were up to 55 gallons of materials spilled but that it was apparently not related to a traffic accident. CHP officials were not able to confirm details on the incident and said the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service was handling it.

An Alameda County fire dispatcher confirmed that their personnel are also at the scene. At 1:10 p.m., the CHP issued a Sig-alert announcing that Altamont Pass was closed between Carroll and Greenville roads due to a spill cleanup. It’s not expected to reopen until about 7 p.m.

Altamont Pass Road at Carrol Road has been closed following a hazardous material spill, according to CHP records.

“County Public Works requested firefighters to respond,” Alameda County Fire spokesperson Aisha Knowles said. “The ACFD Hazardous Materials Team is there.”

According to CHP records, a SigAlert has been issued, closing Altamont Pass Road between I-580/Greenville Rd. and Carroll Rd. The road is estimated to reopen around 7 p.m. Department of Fish & Game is leading the investigation of the spill. CHP records indicate multiple barrels of unspecified liquid spilled in the area.

Department of Fish & Game officials have not yet been reached for comment. Further details were not yet available.
