Livermore Police Accepting School Supply Donations to 'Stuff the Cruiser'

School supplies for kids in Livermore can be dropped off during the 'Stuff the Cruiser' event this weekend.

The Livermore Police Department will be putting on its annual “Stuff the Cruiser” event on Saturday August 9th and Sunday August 10th, 2014.

We will have personnel placing marked police cruisers in front of Wal-Mart (2700 Las Positas Road), Office Max (2400 Las Positas Road), Big Lots (4484 Las Positas Road) and the CVS Pharmacy (1500 First Street) on Saturday and Sunday, August 9th and 10th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. LPD employees and volunteers will be asking community members to stuff the patrol car full of school supplies.

We are hoping to collect school supplies such as backpacks, paper, binders, pens, pencils, erasers, folders, protractors, compasses, glue, calculators, and scissors. All of the collected school supplies will be sorted and the backpacks will be filled on Monday August 11th. The filled backpacks will then be provided to students in need so that they can start the school year with the supplies they need.

Students who will be receiving the donated supplies have been identified through our Horizons Counseling program and the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District. We supply backpacks to students who attend Livermore schools at all grade levels.

Last year we were able to supply nearly 350 students with backpacks filled with school supplies. We hope to be able to provide 400 students with supplies this year.

If someone wants to make a donation, but cannot come to any of the above events, they can drop off their donated school supplies at the front lobby of the Police Department (1110 S. Livermore Avenue) on or before Monday August 11, 2014 at 6:00 p.m.

All of the LPD employees who are coordinating and working this event are volunteering their time to do so.

The “Stuff the Cruiser” program is such a great program on all levels. The Police Department gets to team up with our community to provide school supplies to children who would otherwise not start the year with the necessary supplies. Community members, and the kids receiving the backpacks, get to see our Department personnel as real people who are involved in the community.

The kids who receive the backpacks get to walk into the first day of class with confidence knowing they have all new supplies they will need to be successful in school.
