Marijuana Dispensaries Prohibited In Livermore, For Now

Next year, things may change.

LIVERMORE, CA — Earlier this month, the Livermore City Council adopted an ordinance to prohibit all commercial cannabis activities in Livermore, both recreational and medicinal, city officials said. That decision may change, depending input from the public. Alameda County is also exploring allowing dispensaries in the eastern part of the county, according to city officials.

City officials said several public workshops were held in June in order to gather public input to help the council with their decision.

The Livermore City Attorney released a statement about the decision:

"However, the ordinance expressly exempts the delivery of medicinal cannabis from properly licensed dispensaries located outside Livermore to qualified patients and primary caregivers in Livermore, so long as those dispensaries register with the police department and comply with other administrative conditions. The State licensing authorities are continuing to develop their regulations for the commercial cannabis activities, but those are not expected to be completed until sometime next year. In the meantime, the City Council directed City staff to continue its community outreach activities concerning the possibility of permitting a dispensary in an industrial zone on the north east side of town. Staff anticipates it will provide the results of that outreach to the City Council next spring."

According to city documents, the closest dispensary is located in Hayward, as they are prohibited in Dublin, Pleasanton and San Ramon. The last dispensary in Livermore, Ahmed's Tree of Life, was shut down in 2015 in the wake of criminal allegations of money laundering and illegally opening a pot operation.
